Dr. Benny White is a retired Lieutenant Colonel who served 22 years in the United States Army as a Field Artillery Officer, leading, mentoring and developing future leaders throughout his career before retiring from active duty in 2008.
Prior to retiring, Benny served as the Battalion Commander and Professor of Military Science at Wheaton College from 2005-2008. There Benny was able to combine his love for the military, his strong leadership skills, and his passion for mentorship as he led aspiring professionals into the same career path that made him into the service-oriented man that he is today. As a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point, throughout his military career and afterward, he, Benny’s steadfast commitment to live by West Point’s motto – Duty, Honor, Country – remains at the core of who he is as a person. Following his retirement from the military, Benny began to pave a path instilled in volunteerism. As he began to join a number of organizations dedicated to mentoring and educating youth communities around the Chicagoland area, Benny was determined to apply those same ideals within this space by getting involved in local government.

Serving The Naperville Community
In 2012, Benny was selected to fulfill the term of an outgoing school board member and in 2013 was elected to the Indian Prairie School District #204 Board. In 2017, he became the first person of color elected to serve on the Naperville City Council. While on Council, Benny has made strides in strengthening diversity and advancing inclusion throughout the Naperville community, most notably by leading the effort in updating the language in the city’s mission statement. In 2018, Benny founded a grassroots organization, Naperville Neighbors United which is committed to providing opportunities for neighbors to get to know one another while embracing the rich diversity of Naperville.
Benny has a bachelor’s degree in Management Studies from West Point. He also earned a master’s degree in Kinesiology from Indiana University, an MBA from Webster University, and a doctorate in Values Driven Leadership from Benedictine University.
Originally, from Kansas City and diehard Kansas City Chief fans, Benny and his high school sweetheart, Kim are actively involved in the Naperville community. They have two adult children.
The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most challenging issues facing our country, state, and community. It has affected our local businesses, our schools, and our general quality of life. As a community we must do everything we can to help mitigate this crisis. Benny encourages all residents to follow the CDC guidelines, including the 3 W’s highlighted on the City website:
Wear a mask, Watch your distance and Wash your hands!
As the founder of Naperville Neighbors United, Benny has led community forums that have brought residents together to discuss and learn about our differences. Outstanding presentations and workshops around implicit bias were terrific educational opportunities for our residents. These discussions have allowed audience members, who have included the Mayor, City Council members, and various leaders from neighboring communities, to grow and learn about one another while at the same time embracing our differences.
